An international call for one Postdoctoral fellowship is open to select a researcher to develop scientific research activities at the School of Agriculture (Instituto Superior de Agronomia) of the University of Lisbon, for the project FireCast - Forecasting fire probability and characteristics for a habitable pyroenvironment (PCIF/GRF/0204/2017), funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT, I.P.), with the following conditions:

Scientific areas:
Forestry / Earth and environmental sciences / Geosciences

Admission requisites:
- PhD degree in Forestry, Geographic Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geophysical Sciences, Data Science (or similar research fields);
- Training and knowledge in Fire Ecology, Remote Sensing, Spatial Analysis and Statistical Analysis;
- Programming skills, namely Python, R and Google Earth Engine;
- Proficiency in spoken and written English;
- Excellent team working skills with ability to work using own initiative;
- Good scientific publication record.
- If the qualification has been granted by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with Decree-Law no. 341/2007, of October 12, regulated by Administrative Rule no. 227 / 2017, dated July 25 and updated by Decree-Law no. 66/2018, published in Diário da República, 1st series, no. 157, of August 16, 2018, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled until the hiring date.

Working plan:
The aim of the project is to develop a suite of products related to fire danger and specifically tailored to the needs of the fire community in Portugal. The scholarship work programme will include the development of methodologies for (i) analysing the vegetation status in the spring of 2017 using vegetation indices to identify the factors contributing to the exceptionality of the fires of that year; ii) developing a burned area classification algorithm to monitor the evolution of the burned area and fire severity throughout the fire season using  Sentinel-2 imagery; iii) obtaining maps of fire frequency and fire return interval for the period 1975-2017, with Landsat imagery.

Legislation and applicable regulations:
The scholarship is awarded under Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, amended and republished by Decree-Law no. 202/2012 of 27 August (Statute of the Scientific Research Grantor with amendment of the Statute of the Research Grantor, approved in annex to Law no. 40/2004 , of 18 August) and the current Fellowships and Research Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology (

The work will be developed at the Forest Research Centre (CEF, Centro de Estudos Florestais) of the School of Agriculture, under the scientific supervision of Professor João Neves Silva and Professor José Miguel Cardoso Pereira.

Fellowship duration:
The fellowship will have an initial duration of 12 months, possibly renewable up to a maximum of 30 months, scheduled to begin in October 2019.

Amount of monthly maintenance allowance:
The scholarships correspond to 1 509.80 €, per month, in accordance to the fixed amounts awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal ( Payment will be made monthly by bank transfer.

Selection method:
Applicants rating will be established using the following criteria: general evaluation of Curriculum vitae (30%), research experience in the field of the call (30%), publication record (30%) and motivation letter (10%). If considered necessary, an interview will be held. In this case, the rating will be based on the weights of 70% (Curriculum vitae, research experience, publication record and motivation letter) and 30% (interview). The selection committee reserves the right not to fill the vacancy if candidates do not fulfil the necessary requirements.

Form of publication/notification of results:
Candidates will be notified by e-mail. The results of the evaluation, a list ordered according to the final classification, will be sent by e-mail to all candidates and will be posted in a visible and public place at the School of Agriculture.
