A Research fellowship M.Sc. is now open for applications at CIBIO-InBIO (Reference ICETA 2017-09) in the context of the Project “TAIL –Research data management from creation to deposit and sharing” (PTDC/EEI-ESS/1672/2014 - POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016736) granted by national funds by FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC) and co-funded by FEDER funds through the Operational Programme for Competitiveness Factors (POFC), at institution ICETA.

Scientific areas: Environmental Sciences/Software Engineering and Information Systems

Admission requirements:
Candidates will be admitted to the call when demonstrating: (i) a M.Sc. degree in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Engineering, Mathematical Sciences or Computer Sciences; and, (ii) experience in management, analysis and/or modeling of ecological, biodiversity or environmental data. Preference will be given to candidates with proven experience in: (i) data management and database development; (ii) use of GIS and spatial data; (iii) metadata models and metadata description; (iv) participation in basic or applied research projects involving data management and sharing; and, (v) dissemination of scientific results, namely through publications in peer reviewed journals and participation in scientific meetings. The candidate is expected to exhibit initiative, enthusiasm, good verbal and written communication skills in English, and teamwork skills.

Project overview and workplan:
There is a growing awareness among researchers of the value of data created and gathered in research projects. Moreover, guidelines for data sharing and publication of such data in repositories are being defined by funding agencies. TAIL aims to tackle Research Data Management, a pressing need for both researchers and funding agencies. In collaboration with TAIL team members, the fellowship holder will be responsible for: (1) conducting a comprehensive literature review on existing metadata models applied in ecology and biodiversity research; (2) proposing metadata models to support data management, sharing and publication; and (3) applying selected metadata models to representative types of ecological, biodiversity and environmental data, including metadata identification, collection and management of pre-existing spatial (meta)data. The fellowship holder will collaborate in writing technical reports and scientific publications, and will participate in project meetings. The participation in national and international seminars and conferences is expected.

Legislation framework:
A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of 29 January, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July, to Fellowships Regulation of FCT ( ), and to Fellowships Regulation of ICETA approved by FCT.

Work place:
The work will be conducted at CIBIO-InBIO, UP – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, Universidade do Porto, Campus de Vairão, Rua Padre Armando Quintas, 7, 4485-661 Vairão, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Ângela Lomba ( Visits and working periods in the leading partner of the project (INESC, Porto) are also expected.

The fellowship will have a duration of 6 months, potentially renewable for an additional period of 6 months, expected to start May 2017.

Monthly stipend is €980 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal ( Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and will benefit from a work insurance.

The call for applications is open between 11/03/2017 and 25/03/2017 (24:00 GMT). Applications must be submitted by email to with the fellowship reference (Reference ICETA 2017-09) in the subject area, and the following documents attached:
a) Curriculum vitae (including academic training and professional career, a publication list, other relevant information in the context of the project research goals, email address and copies of certificates of academic degrees);
b) Motivation Letter (including a brief description of research interests and experience and why the candidate is suitable for the announced position).
The candidates that fail to include all these documents in their application will not be considered for evaluation.

Selection criteria:
From the candidates admitted to the call, the jury panel will select the best candidate based on his/her merit for the work plan, specifically:
Overall appreciation of the Curriculum Vitae (50%), namely considering the admission and preference criteria listed under ‘Admission requirements’;
Motivation letter (20%);
Interview (30%), conducted in person or by videoconference.
If the candidates do not fulfill the required quality standards, the jury may decide not to award the fellowship.

Publicity and communication of results:
Candidates will be directly informed by email about the result of their application. The ranking of the candidates will be published at a visible and public area of CIBIO facilities at Campus Agrário de Vairão, Rua Padre Armando Quintas, nº 7, 4485-661 Vairão, Vila do Conde.
