Position Description
The Trails Project Coordinator is a full-time, permanent position with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust's Land Stewardship Program. This regionally acclaimed program plays an integral role in coordinating trail construction and maintenance projects to enhance the 1,000-mile wildland trail network on the 800,000 acres of public land in the Mountains to Sound Greenway outside of Seattle, Washington. The program coordinates trail crews, contractors and extensive community involvement in these on-the-ground efforts.
The Trails Project Coordinator will assist in developing and implementing multiple trail construction projects and an expanding trail maintenance program, which is integrated with federal, state and local agencies who manage these public lands. The position will include direct field supervision of projects, tracking of field results, operation of trail equipment, preparing trail surveys, and completing trail designs. In addition to on the ground work, this position will play an integral role in the "trail experience" throughout the landscape; developing a voice for the trail system.
The right candidate will be an experienced trail hand who is detail oriented, quality and efficiency driven and is able to work both independently and in a leadership role with trail crews, volunteers and contractors. The Trails Project Coordinator position offers the potential for extensive professional growth and exposure in managing a large multi-use trail network across a multi-jurisdictional landscape. The position reports to the Stewardship Director.
Responsibilities
•On-site Project Supervision: Provide oversight of work completed by trail crews, volunteers, contractors and partner organizations. This includes providing necessary training and direction, maintaining high production, quality and safety standards.
•Project Development: Develop trail project plans, which includes trail layout and design, project descriptions, mapping and photo documentation.
•Project Tracking: Track field results of projects including daily work logs, trail log updates, photo documentation and preparation of project reports.
•Trail Maintenance: Coordinate trail and trailhead maintenance, signage and other tasks across a varied landscape.
•Volunteer Supervision: Manage projects to provide volunteers opportunities to learn about and participate in the maintenance of local trails.
•Restoration Program Support: Work alongside Restoration Project Coordinator to complete ecological restoration projects as necessary.
•Equipment Operation: Operate specialized equipment as needed (chainsaws, brushcutters, rigging, tractors and other small equipment).
•Field Program Logistics: Assist in the management of field program resources (such as vehicles, tools and other supplies).
•Other Program Tasks: Completion of other tasks as required.
Qualifications
•A minimum of four field seasons of trail experience with comprehensive knowledge and understanding of trail maintenance and construction techniques.
•Bachelor's degree or experience in a conservation-related field.
•Strong written and verbal communication skills.
•Demonstrated ability to work successfully in independent settings with minimal supervision and to operate as part of a large team.
•Verified experience working with a wide variety of field staff, agency personnel, contractors, recreational users and other stakeholders to accomplish trail projects.
•Proven personal initiative and ability to handle multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment (to prioritize, use good judgment, and problem solve).
•Demonstrated ability to motivate crews and volunteers and effectively instruct others in trail work, practices and standards, tool use, safety and teamwork.
•Skill in safe use, operation and maintenance of vehicles, hand tools, chainsaws, brush cutters, power carriers and other mechanical equipment.
•Ability to regularly lift 50 pounds, hike in mountain terrain and work under physically demanding conditions, including cold and wet weather.
•Standard computer skills using Windows, Word and Excel.
•Valid driver's license with insurable driving record.
•Strong organizational skills; prompt, dependable, flexible work habits and appropriate professional demeanor.
•Experience with rigging equipment, GPS/mapping, carpentry, rockwork, and mechanized power equipment (excavators, rock drills, etc.) is desired.
•Wilderness First Aid (or higher) and CPR training desired.
Compensation
Salary depends on experience. Includes excellent medical, vacation, and retirement benefits.
Work Schedule
Full-time exempt position with flexible schedule, including some weekends and occasional evenings.
Work Location
The primary work location is at the Greenway Field Base in Issaquah, from where transportation is provided to worksites throughout the Greenway.
