Groundwater Remediation/Reactive Transport Modeling

The Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a Post-doctoral Fellow in the field of reactive transport modeling with a focus on groundwater remediation. The successful applicant will be involved in the evaluation and development of reactive transport modeling tools for simulating remediation of Strontium-90 (Sr-90) using Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) and Reactive Sandpacks.

Sr-90 is one of the fission products of uranium and has been produced as waste in large quantities during reprocessing of nuclear fuel. Sr-90 is the most problematic of all radionuclides at disposal sites, because it is mobile, accumulates in discharge zones, and can result in unacceptably elevated concentrations in swamps and surface water. Therefore, remediation is essential to protect the environment. The objectives of this project include testing of the capabilities of the existing reactive transport code MIN3P for simulating the geochemical processes in passive and active Sr-90 treatment systems. In a second phase, model limitations identified during Phase 1 will be addressed by implementing the necessary code modifications (e.g. multisite ion exchange models).

Minimum Requirements: A Ph.D., strong programming skills, preferably in Fortran 90, experience in the development and application of complex computer codes is required. Candidates with an expertise in hydrogeology, geochemistry, and reactive transport modeling are preferred. A one-year appointment will begin as soon as a suitable candidate has been identified; the appointment may be extended for up to two additional years. Salary is dependent upon educational level and experience; the minimum salary is $50,000 Cdn per annum + benefits.

Applications, including a CV, copies of two relevant publications, and the names, e-mails, and phone numbers of three referees should be sent to Dr. Ulrich Mayer, Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences, The University of British Columbia, 6339 Stores Road, Vancouver, BC, V6T 1Z4 (Phone: 604-822-1539; fax: 604-822-6088; e-mail: [email protected]). The application deadline is Sept. 15, but will be extended if a suitable candidate has not been identified.

UBC hires on the basis of merit and is committed to employment equity. We encourage all qualified persons to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
