Research Scientists Open
APEC Climate Center (APCC), located in Busan, Korea, is looking for motivated scientists for the following program described below.
APEC Climate Center was established with the endorsement of APEC Senior Officials in 2005. It is mandated to provide climate information services to the 21 APEC member economies to promote human security and protect life and property from hazards associated with extreme climate events. Since then, APCC has been steadily gaining momentum in becoming a leading center that provides various climate forecast products and capacity building programs in the region. Now, APCC is expanding the area of research and service to cater to wider socio-economic needs and interests.
1. Climate Prediction (Intraseasonal to Interannual time scale)
This programs' objective is to enhance predictability and utility of current multi-model ensemble seasonal forecast system in APCC based on various global climate model forecasts. Researchers will perform various dynamical and statistical modeling, spatial and temporal downscaling, model output statistics, multi-model ensemble and the couple model initialization for ISI prediction to develop a new climate prediction system of APCC. Basic researches on climate predictability and variability are also part of research themes as a basis of improving climate prediction system.
2. Climate Change (decadal to centennial time scale)
One of new mission of APCC is to provide reliable regional climate change information for developing adaptation and mitigation strategy. Assessment of regional climate change scenarios, detection of long term changes of various weather events (heavy rain, drought, tropical cyclones, etc) based on past observations and model simulations, understanding of uncertainty in the climate change projections are research topics. Other researches to improve our understanding and quality of climate change information can be performed.
3. Climate Informatics and Applications
To create real value of climate prediction for various socio-economic sectors, APCC is actively expanding its research area into climate informatics and applications. This program aims to build an efficient provision mechanism of climate information to users and also to develop value-added climate prediction products on climate variability across time scales including climate change. Expertise in climate application modeling (crop, hydrology, air-quality, etc) and climate risk managements is desirable. Developing early warning systems for climate hazards (drought, flood and other extreme events) and regional adaptation strategy for climate change are themes to be tackled.
The position (senior researcher, researcher, or post-doc) will be determined based on his/her expertise and work experience. The first term of position is up to 3 years with possible renewal based on the performance. The applicants should have Ph.D. in climate sciences or relevant field.
