IMAR - Instituto do Mar

Call for a fixed-term researcher contract to develop ecosystem-based spatial management approaches to deep-water ecosystems of the Azores and the North-Atlantic Ocean (ATLAS / MERCES) IMAR Institute of Marine Research is opening a call for applications for a fixed-term research contract is now open within the funded EU H2020 projects “ATLAS - A Trans-Atlantic Assessment and deep-water ecosystem-based spatial management plan for Europe” (grant agreement 678760) and “MERCES - Marine Ecosystem Restoration in Changing European Seas” (grant agreement No 689518). The selected candidate will sign a temporary contract, for uncertain resolute term, according to the code of the Portuguese labour, article 140º, nº3, , with the duration of 12 months starting on April 2019, or as soon as the selection process is completed.

Field of research:

The candidate will coordinate a multidisciplinary research team to develop ecosystem-based spatial management approaches to deep-water ecosystems of the Azores EEZ and the large North-Atlantic Ocean.

The main objectives of this position are:

(1) to improve the understanding, model and map biodiversity of different types of VMEs indicator taxa and key deep-sea fish species across the Azores and the North Atlantic;
(2) apply indicators of GES relevant to the deep-sea ecosystems for the MSFD and its constituent descriptors;
(3) to develop ecosystem-based spatial models of the Azores EEZ;
(4) measure and predict changes in biodiversity in the Azores and the North Atlantic under future scenarios of climate conditions;
(5) identify spatial areas relevant for the sustainable management and protection of the Azores and the North Atlantic deep-sea ecosystem over the short and long-term;
(6) to develop practices for deep-sea restoration in different deep-sea ecosystems and at geographical scales relevant to management and promote the integration of deep-sea restoration into policy objectives.

The candidate will also assist with the management of different research projects, mentoring post-docs, students and other project tasks.

Admission requirements:

- Candidates must hold a PhD degree in resource management, marine ecology or biology, or a related field.
- Candidates must have at least 5 years of post-PhD experience as an independent researcher with relevant experience in the scientific field of research and demonstrating scientific independence.
- Scientific independence is demonstrated through scientific competence, originality and international recognition, by experience in doctoral or post-doctoral supervision, and by the competitive research funds attracted at national or international level.

- Candidates must also demonstrate:

1. Experience in modelling and mapping deep-sea marine biodiversity;
2. Experience in assessing Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VME);
3. Experience in developing temporal and spatial ecosystem-based modelling approaches;
4. Experience in the application of indicators of GES relevant to the deep-sea ecosystems;
5. Experience with predicting changes in deep-sea biodiversity distribution under future scenarios of climate conditions;
6. Experience in identify spatial areas relevant for the sustainable management and protection
7. Good knowledge of restoration practices and its applicability to the deep sea Candidates should also demonstrate a good publication record in the field of the call, an exemplary performance in oral and written communication in English, and a good knowledge of deep-sea ecosystems in the Azores region.

Work plan:

The candidate will have the following coordination and scientific responsibilities:

1. Coordinate and participate in the collection of new deep-sea biodiversity distribution data in the Azores EEZ;
2. Coordinate the development and application of Multi Criteria Assessment method for identifying Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems in the North-East Atlantic;
3. Coordinate the development and application of temporal and spatial ecosystem based models for the Azores EEZ;
4. Coordinate and develop state-of the-art distribution models to estimate the potential spatial distributions of deep-sea VMEs indicator taxa and key deep-sea fish species under current and future climate conditions;
5. Coordinate and apply methodologies to measure baseline values for indicators the GES in the Azores;
6. Coordinate and develop numerical optimization tools to identify areas in the Azores and the North Atlantic that achieve sustainable management and conservation objectives under current and future climate conditions;
7. Coordinate and develop principles, guidelines and tools for deep-sea restoration;
8. Writing reports and scientific articles in the field of this call.
